Podcast Episode Summary

Welcome to our very first episode!  We will be using a lot of short-hand throughout our episodes, so we wanted to start with an overview of the two personality type models we will refer to the most: Myers-Briggs and Enneagram. We also wanted to take the time to do a little introduction of ourselves.

Sandra talks about her vision for this podcast

  • Bring awareness of how personality type can be helpful in the home
  • Mostly Myers-Briggs focused because of her background and because that’s the personality type model she has found most useful to apply to kids
  • Enneagram will be mentioned a lot and we’ll do some Enneagram-centric episodes because we both have found enneagram interesting and helpful in our lives
  • Occasionally bring in other personality type models based on our own or listener interest
  • An informational topic each episode that will help change the way you see your family
  • Fun segments, including Why Do They Do That and Em Spends too Much Time on the Internet
  • Guests every few episodes to bring different perspectives

Sandra Introduces Herself:

Sandra is the Owner of Family Personalities. She works with families and personality type. She is MBTI and MMTIC certified. (Those are Myers-Briggs assessments for both adults and children, respectively). She is an INFJ.

Sandra does not have formal training in Enneagram, so she puts a disclaimer out there that she is no expert. However, both she and Em have an interest in Enneagram and have found it useful in their own lives. Sandra is an Enneagram 1. But she is embarrassed to admit that sometimes, as she feels people have a pre-judgement about them.

Sandra has a 7 year old INTJ son and a 4 year old ISFP daughter. She also has a 13 year old ESTP step-daughter who visits on occasion. Sandra is married to an INTJ Enneagram 5.

Em Introduces Herself

Em is an INFP and Enneagram 4. She is the mom of a five year old daughter. Em explains that she is a lawyer and an “accidental politician” running for state office. She is married to an ISTJ Enneagram 1.

Em and Sandra explain that they met through a mutual love/hate relationship with The Bachelor Franchise, and also through the MOMS Club of Bend!

Topic of the Day: Intro to MBTI and Enneagram

Myers-Briggs

  • Myers-Briggs types are denoted by 4 letters which come from 4 preference pairs
    • I/E – Introversion / Extraversion
    • S/N – Sensing / iNtuition
    • T/F – Thinking / Feeling
    • J/P – Judging / Perceiving
  • Sandra explains that having that letter does not mean you only do one or the other in the pair. We all do all of the 8 preferences, but we just have a natural preference for one or the other in each pair
  • The letters don’t stand alone, they work together so that e.g. an INFJ does not use their feeling in the same way that an INFP does
  • There is a deeper level to Myers-Briggs called the cognitive functions
    • Cognitive functions can help explain why you might have a hard time choosing between the preferences
    • And they divide the S, N, T and F further into two different ways of expressing those preferences
  • You’re born this way and your type never changes

Enneagram

  • There are 9 types which are denoted by the numbers 1 through 9
    • 1- The Reformer.
    • 2- The Helper.
    • 3- The Achiever.
    • 4- The Individualist.
    • 5- The Investigator.
    • 6- The Loyalist.
    • 7 – The Enthusiast.
    • 8 – The Challenger.
    • 9 – The Peacemaker.
  • Wings – you can have a wing which is the number on either side of your type
  • Subtypes – Beatrice Chestnut has a great book The Complete Enneagram that delves into the subtypes.
    • Self-preservation
    • Social
    • 1:1/Sexual
  • Sandra explains that she has read/heard conflicting things about whether you’re born with your Enneagram type or it develops based on early childhood experiences
